Today, January 22, Ukraine celebrates Unity Day, the anniversary of the proclamation of the Act of Zluka of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UNR) and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (ZUNR), signed on January 22, 1919. This document became one of the historical foundations of the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine in 1991 .
This document united two states on the basis of Ukrainian lands into a single conciliar Ukrainian state as part of the Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires. ZUNR received the right to complete autonomy and the name of the Western region of the Ukrainian People’s Republic.
