Serge Lifar that was born in Kyiv was a French ballet dancer and choreographer, and famous as one of the greatest male ballet dancers of the 20th century. From 1930 to 1944, and from 1947 to 1958, he was ballet master of the Paris Opera who devoted himself to the restoration of the technical level of the Paris Opera Ballet, returning it to its place as one of the best companies in the world. But he was Not only a dancer and choreographer, Serge Lifar was also a director, writer, theoretician about dance, and collector.

The Golden Ballet Shoes is an international choreography award given to Serge Lifar in 1955 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his creative activity at the French National Opera.
